Conference Support

Campus Alberta Neuroscience Conference Support Program
Campus Alberta Neuroscience (CAN) offers support for organizers of Alberta-based conferences related to neuroscience and mental health research, education, and translation. This program is designed exclusively to support and facilitate trainee attendance at conferences held by CAN’s three affiliated institutions (University of Alberta, University of Calgary, and University of Lethbridge) or by other relevant organizations holding conferences in Alberta. By promoting and facilitating trainee attendance, this program supports the establishment and expansion of cross campus neuroscience and mental health networks and collaborations within Alberta.

Team Formation

This program is designed to support the development, establishment and expansion of cross-campus collaborations and teams.
The program supports neuroscience and mental health researchers and trainees from the University of Alberta, University of Calgary and University of Lethbridge engaging in initial collaborative discussions, as well as meetings of research groups and networks. The Team Formation Program offers reimbursement of up to $2,500 in travel and meeting costs (within Alberta) to bring researchers together to develop productive collaborations in neuroscience and mental health research and/or translation.

International Scholars

Campus Alberta Neuroscience International Scholars (CANIS) Program
This program supports short-term, but substantive, visits to Alberta by prominent international neuroscience and mental health scholars. These up-to-two week exchanges will enable knowledge sharing across the Campus Alberta Neuroscience (CAN) network. Through increased international discussion and connection, the CANIS program supports the development and enhancement of inter-campus collaborations within Alberta. Visiting scholars will normally visit two or three of the affiliated Alberta institutions (University of Alberta, University of Calgary and University of Lethbridge) during their visit.

HOW TO APPLY

Download the International Scholars (CANIS) Program Guidelines for instructions on how to apply to this program.

Postdoctoral Fellowship

Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF) Program
Campus Alberta Neuroscience (CAN) offers the Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF) Program to enrich the experience of neuroscience and mental health trainees through increased collaboration, skill transfer and mentorship across campuses. We aim to attract the best and brightest new scholars to Alberta, providing them with professional training opportunities and ensuring successful research career trajectories in neuroscience or mental health related fields.

OVERVIEW

These one- or two-year fellowships offer a rich training opportunity in a multi-institutional collaborative research program across CAN’s affiliated institutions: University of Alberta, University of Calgary, and University of Lethbridge. Recipients of the CAN PDF award will typically carry out their research activities at two of CAN’s affiliated institutions. Recipients will engage in research and training activities at their home institution, while also maintaining significant collaboration and connection to their partner institution.

PARTNERED AWARD – Multiple Sclerosis

In partnership with the Alberta MS Collaboration, Campus Alberta Neuroscience is offering a Postdoctoral Fellowship Competition for clinical and research proposals from Alberta-based trainees focused on multiple sclerosis (MS) in the area of neuro-protection and repair.

The Alberta MS Collaboration

Established in 2014, the Alberta MS Collaboration is a multi-stakeholder initiative co-led by Campus Alberta Neuroscience and the Alberta MS Network. Other partners include Alberta Economic Development and Trade, Alberta HealthMS Society of Canada and Sanofi Genzyme Canada. Funding for this competition was provided by Sanofi Genzyme Canada.

Click here for more information on the Alberta MS Collaboration.

RESEARCH FOCUS – Neuroprotection and Repair

Current available disease modifying therapies for treating MS target immune modulation; however most patients taking these medications still experience disease progression. More research, from basic science to clinical research that includes clinical trials, is needed to understand and address neurodegeneration and brain repair. Understanding these processes and translating basic science knowledge to clinical practice will result in better strategies for preventing the accumulation of axonal loss leading to permanent disability, or for identifying treatments and approaches capable of reversing damage thereby restoring function. Research plans submitted as part of the application for this competition should be focused in the area of neuro-protection and repair.

Campus Alberta Neuroscience is working with its partners to offer additional Postdoctoral Fellowship opportunities in other areas of neuroscience and mental health.

ELIGIBILITY

Funding is available for both clinical and research fellowships in the areas of neuroprotection and care in MS. Postdoctoral fellows are encouraged, but not required to have a multi-institutional collaborative component. Please consult the Program Guidelines for specific eligibility criteria.

HOW TO APPLY

This competition is now open.

Timeline:

  • Announcement: February 1, 2018
  • Application Deadline: May 15, 2018
